This is my family.
They’re great. But they are not what I planned.
See that handsome guy on the left in the red tie? Yeah, him. That’s Phil. He’s not the guy I married. That was a different guy, in 1999. Our marriage ended in 2011 when we separated and ultimately divorced. It was sad. It wasn’t what I planned.
But what’s that saying, “The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry”? It’s so true. My parents were married when they were 17 and 19; they’re in their 70s now and still going strong. I thought that would be me. But it wasn’t.
And although I know I’m far from alone, being divorced was not a label I ever wanted. It’s been hard letting go and moving on. But now, Phil and I are engaged and these are our awesome kids. We’re blending a family. And it’s a lot of hard work!
It’s not what I planned. But we are blessed. These are our adventures: the good, the bad, the ugly. And the great.
